My passion, my job and my experience

I am Martin Skeet, I am a member of the Institute of the Motor Industry and my main area of expertise is firmly on 1960s Porsches and E-Type Jaguars but I work on all classic cars from the 1950s to the 1980s.

In addition to my classic car inspection practice I work with classic cars full time as owner of a leading classic car restorer. This means I bring deep experience of correct processes as well as up to date knowledge of full and partial restoration costs. My work covers inspections, valuations, restoration budgeting and research on classic marques to establishing correct factory original finishes.

My inspection reports are typically used in legal disputes, probate valuation or to buy or sell at the right price. My expert witness Civil Procedure Rules (part 35) compliant reports are often focussed on poor restoration or overspend disputes. For owners and restorers in these disputes I bring a forensic knowledge of the correct processes as well as the understanding that restoring a car is not a straight-line process. For me it’s all about defining what is reasonable from each side.

I’m connected with many different trades and suppliers to the classic car industry: electrical, paint, trimming, engine and gearbox specialists, gauge refurbishment, etc. If a car you wish to purchase or sell needs work to be perfect or to achieve the best sale price - I can certainly help.

Beyond checking for a healthy and good quality example of the marque, my passion is on originality of parts and correct details for the manufacturing year. I have spent many years building up a library of original sales brochures, options lists and specifications which I use to check for originality. Today the market is shifting from complete restorations that present a car in an ‘as new’ condition to restorations that respect and preserve original features and patina.

The collecting market for classics vehicles continues to grow despite local and global financial insecurity. Classic cars continue to be attractive as a tax free alternative investments. Understanding what makes an example truly valuable is about understanding the smallest details.
